I have to start this post by saying I was born into an incredible family of successful people. I often marvel at this blessing and try to live up to the opportunities I've been given.
One of my brothers is working with me on a family project. We've been emailing and talking quite a bit lately. I admire him for so many things. After a recent conversation with him, I decided to act on some of his advice to me.
I am really good at seeing others' talents. I consider myself one of the best cheerleaders around. If there's something you need to do, I believe you can, and I will do all I can to encourage and help you do it. I believe this is a great talent, and it brings me untold joy.
However, I often let my fear of failure prevent me from trying or doing things. I will not allow others to dwell on those thoughts. Following this conversation with my brother, I remembered what I already know...perhaps the biggest failure is the failure to try.
I've wanted to sew myself a skirt for several years. About two years ago I bought a pattern. It had a zipper. I don't know how to put in a zipper. I've only sewed costumes. I don't know how to make adjustments if it doesn't fit.
Well, look at this...not too closely, but still, I think it's good enough to wear.
Progress! Maybe slow, but progress nonetheless!
I just wanted to share what's making me smile today...not fishing for complements or reassurances. I would love to hear what's making you smile, though.
The skirt looks amazing! You've inspired me to finally make Simon his quilt that I've been putting off for the past few months (I bought everything a while back, but have been too intimidated by the project).
ReplyDeleteAs for something that's making me smile: Listening to Simon have a conversation about his day with his teddy bear while he tries to wind down for his nap.
Yay! Go Martha! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's darling!! I love it! And you are one of the most successful people I know. It is your talent to recognize the ability others have and to cheer them on. You've cheered me on more times than I can count. Now, you just have to learn to do that for yourself!
ReplyDeleteI've been teaching a sewing class once a month to the sisters in our ward. It requires much patience. Believe me a skirt is a ways down the road for them. But I enjoy doing it. Remember when I made you a maternity top when you were pregnant with Morgan?? Can't believe it was that long ago. Keep up the good work. The more you sew the easier it gets!! Miss you!
ReplyDeleteVery cute! Love the shoes too.
ReplyDeleteIt is really cute! You are a great cheerleader but I think that you are pretty incredible at everything you do! You are the one who made me get over my fear of trying my hand at sewing. I haven't conquered a zipper yet but I am proud of the projects that I have done and seeing a sewing machine doesn't strike fear in my heart anymore!
